Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the health and fitness industry has experienced constant change and fought to stay alive and relevant. It’s evident that the active population can’t give up their in-person fitness routines—in 2021, more than one out of five Americans belonged to a health club or fitness studio, totaling 66.5 million consumers ages six and older. This data shows 3.6% growth over the last two years and the need for consumers to feel like part of the community.

The report identifies:

  • popular exercise equipment and activity types,

  • the average cost of membership,

  • how often consumers and members visit health and fitness facilities,

  • the most sought-after facility type, and more.

A deeper look into the data highlights specific trends among demographic groups, including:

  • Gender,

  • Age/Education,

  • Household Income, and

  • Race/Ethnicity.

In 2021, Sports Marketing Surveys USA conducted 18,000 online interviews with a nationwide sample of individuals ages six and older. This report concentrates on the active consumer and member—i.e., someone who used a health club and/or fitness studio within the past 12 months.
