Evidence-Driven Insights for Industry and Policymakers

Physical inactivity has emerged as a key driver of preventable diseases and premature mortality worldwide. Health and fitness facilities, as enablers of regular physical activity, provide professionally guided, evidence-based programs at scale proven to reduce chronic disease risk, improve mental health, and build stronger communities. Yet, access remains uneven, with affordability being a leading barrier.

To help address this challenge, the Health & Fitness Association (HFA) and the Global Health & Fitness Alliance (GHFA) have launched groundbreaking research: Reversing the Physical Inactivity Crisis – Fitness Affordability as Strategic Policy.

These first-of-their-kind reports empower fitness industry leaders and policymakers with compelling data to champion fitness affordability as a key strategy in combating physical inactivity. By prioritizing affordability and expanding access to structured exercise, we can drive:

  • Healthier Communities: Reduced chronic disease prevalence and improved mental well-being.
  • Lower Healthcare Costs: Less strain on public healthcare systems.
  • Stronger Societies: Increased life satisfaction and enhanced community trust.

Methodology and Key Findings

Produced in partnership with Portas Consulting, the study combines insights from nearly 11,300 urban adults across 10 markets—Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, and the United States—with Portas’ proprietary Social Return on Investment (SROI) model.

A hypothetical 10% reduction in fitness pricing revealed remarkable potential:

  • Health Savings: A return on investment (ROI) of 1.5x to 4x through reductions in chronic disease prevalence and improved public health outcomes.
  • Economic Growth: Increased consumer spending in fitness and related industries, as well as new job creation.
  • Social Benefits: Greater life satisfaction and stronger community cohesion.
