“The foundation for any successful program begins with understanding the target audience for that program. Basically, it’s important to know your community.”

Alexandra Black Larcom, Senior Manager of Health Promotion & Health Policy

IHRSA

Community outreach programs that offer important club resources to the community outside the constructs of membership can help your club in a number of ways. It can set your club apart, show the community you care, give staff a sense of purpose, and attract new members.

The Get Active America! Program can be a good place to start. Originally launched as an IHRSA member enrollment program, Get Active America! ran during the month of May to coincide with National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Now you can run Get Active America! and open the doors of your club to the community any time during the year.

Designate a week at your club as Get Active America! week, to have the opportunity to open your doors to the community. You may choose to open your doors to the entire community for all seven days, or invite only friends and relatives of members for part of the week, and the public for the other part of the week.

This e-book will provide the resources you need to run a successful community outreach program, with or without Get Active America!. These include:

  • Steps to plan your outreach initiative
  • Tips to promote your initiative
  • Strategies to convert visitors into new members
  • Health promotion program ideas
  • Template for a marketing flyer
