The 2019 legislative season hit the ground running. We have already tracked over 250 pieces of legislation that could change the way the fitness industry conducts business in 42 states. While some of the bills we are tracking are not great for the fitness industry, not all news surrounding proposed bills are bad. In fact, we have some good news for the fitness industry operating in Wyoming.
The Good: Sales Tax Defeat
In Wyoming, we successfully fought a sales tax proposal!
Lawmakers in Wyoming adjourned on February 28 without passing House Bill 67, which died in committee. Beginning in July 2019, H.B. 67 would have applied the state sales tax to health club memberships, including:
- physical fitness services
- dance studios, dance schools
- dance halls
- bowling centers
- public golf courses
- membership sports clubs
IHRSA submitted testimony and created an advocacy campaign in response to this legislation. IHRSA believes that the government should encourage citizens to pursue regular exercise and healthy lifestyles, not discourage them by taxing health club memberships and services.
