ALBANY, NY—June 30, 2020—The NYS Fitness Alliance (NYSFA) has released a science-based, data-backed, comprehensive plan to safely open gyms and fitness centers across New York. In accordance with Governor Cuomo’s goals to follow the facts and science in reopening, NYSFA created a plan based on the best available State and Federal guidance to develop a plan that will allow New Yorkers to minimize risk of exposure to COVID-19 while improving their physical health.

“NYSFA continues to plan for a safe reopening that protects our employees, customers and the general public. We have developed a reopening plan – with input from various experienced owners across the state of small and large clubs – that meets or exceeds CDC, DOH and OSHA guidelines,” said Bill Lia, Executive Director of New York State Fitness Alliance. “We are ready to reopen upon state approval, to continue to promote a healthy lifestyle only gyms and fitness centers can provide. We support the Governors belief of following the facts and our plan continues that approach while allowing New Yorkers get back to fitness centers and studios safely.”

The NYSFA plan includes extensive safety protocols for employees, members, and contractors. Gym employees will be required to wear masks, clean surfaces regularly, and be trained on all safety protocols. Members will be required to wear a mask to enter the facility and keep six feet distancing from other members and gym staff while working out.

In order to assist the State with the contact tracing program, all members will sign in electronically and a record will be kept of persons on the premises. Additionally, total physical capacity will be capped at 50% of the maximum capacity authorized by building and fire codes.

Fitness centers play a critical role in the fight against chronic disease including diabetes, heart disease, hyper-tension, and obesity. Gyms and fitness centers help their members maintain a healthy lifestyle which is important for both physical and mental health. The services provided by gyms and fitness centers are a recognized extension of the health care system, with many insurance carriers providing reimbursement for gym memberships.
