Health & Fitness Association Statement on the Confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health & Human Services

HFA congratulates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his confirmation as the Secretary of Health & Human Services and stands ready to work with HHS to help make America healthier.

Washington, D.C.— February 13, 2025— The Health & Fitness Association (HFA) congratulates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his confirmation as the Secretary of Health & Human Services (HHS). As our nation grapples with rising rates of chronic disease, mental health challenges, and the growing economic burden of preventable health conditions, we welcome the opportunity to work with Secretary Kennedy and HHS to advance policies that prioritize preventive health and wellness through physical activity.

The health and fitness industry is uniquely positioned to be the tip of the spear in making America healthier. Science has long confirmed that regular exercise is one of the most effective tools for preventing and managing chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Yet, federal policy has historically underutilized fitness and structured physical activity as a frontline solution in public health.

We stand ready to partner with Secretary Kennedy and HHS to:

    • Expand access to fitness and wellness programs by integrating exercise into healthcare and public health initiatives.
    • Reduce financial barriers to fitness through smart policy solutions like the PHIT Act, allowing Americans to use their pre-tax dollars for structured physical activity.
    • Support mental health through movement, reinforcing the role of exercise in combating stress, anxiety, and depression.
    • Strengthen community health partnerships, ensuring that fitness facilities, health professionals, and policymakers work together to create sustainable health solutions.

The HFA and our member organizations—fitness facilities of all types and sizes—are ready to help HHS develop and implement policies that put movement at the center of the nation’s health strategy. By working together, we can empower more Americans to take charge of their health, reduce healthcare costs, and improve overall well-being.
